Ribbonwood
Description
Ribbonwood (Plagianthus regius), or mānatu, is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing native trees, making it a powerhouse for restoration. With its light, airy canopy and strong ecological benefits, it’s a go-to for kickstarting regeneration. Kereru feast on the leaves of Ribbonwood in the winter so it is also an important food source.
Speedy Growth: One of the quickest native trees to establish, providing shelter for slower species.
Pollinator & Bird Friendly: Small, nectar-rich flowers attract bees, while birds love the shelter.
Soil Stabilizer: Strong roots help prevent erosion, making it ideal for riparian planting.
How to Use It
- Plant in open areas, riparian zones, or mixed native revegetation projects.
- Partner with wineberry, karamu, and kōwhai for a high-impact restoration mix.
- Low-maintenance— we recommend releasing in the Spring (maybe again in the Summer depending on weed growth), then let them thrive.
Ribbonwood is a restoration game-changer, providing fast canopy cover and essential habitat. Plant it and watch the forest take shape!
