The Recyclable Plant Tray Revolution

At Restore Native, we’re always striving to make our processes as sustainable as possible. As a nursery, we understand the environmental impact that plastic can have, and we’ve seen firsthand the waste it can create in the industry. From discarded pots to bags left out in the elements, plastic waste has been a major concern. That’s why we decided to take action.

The Problem with Traditional Plastic in the Nursery Industry

For years, the nursery industry has relied heavily on plastic for growing and transporting plants. While plastic is durable, it's not biodegradable, and many of the pots and trays used in tree planting can end up in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution. This was something we wanted to change.

Our Solution: Recyclable Plant Trays

We teamed up with a New Zealand-based plastics manufacturer to create a No. 5 recyclable plastic tray. This innovative tray is designed specifically for tree production and can be reused for about five years before it’s ready to be recycled. With 28 cells in each tray, it’s perfect for our revegetation planting projects, and its durability ensures that we can continue using it over and over again, minimizing waste.

This effort reflects our broader mission: to offer more than just native trees but to make sure every step of the process is done with sustainability in mind.

How It Works

When the trays are no longer suitable for use, instead of adding to landfill waste, they are returned to the manufacturer to be recycled. This significantly reduces the environmental footprint of tree production and encourages a circular economy, where materials are reused and repurposed instead of discarded.

Beyond the Trees

We believe that being a part of the solution means going beyond just planting native trees. At Restore Native, we’re committed to producing plants in an eco-friendly way, ensuring that every aspect of our operations supports a sustainable future. From growing native trees to offering recyclable products like our trays, we’re doing our part to minimize waste and preserve the environment.
