The Art of Infill Planting – Enhancing Native Forests

Infill planting is a vital step in creating a thriving, biodiverse native forest. At Restore Native, we believe forests aren’t just “one and done.” They require care, maintenance, and sometimes a little help to fill in gaps and evolve into robust ecosystems in the first few years.

What is Infill Planting?
Infill planting involves adding new plants to an area where a native forest is already established or starting to take root. It’s particularly useful in:

  • Replenishing Gaps: Areas where trees were removed, such as old poplars or other non-natives.

  • Enhancing Diversity: Introducing long-lived or slow-growing species to complement faster-growing plants.

  • Strengthening the Forest Edge: Filling in the boundaries to create a fuller, healthier forest.

A Real-Life Example
Recently, we worked on a project where old poplars were removed from the fringe of a native planting area established three years ago. Behind this zone, a beautiful stand of young native trees had already started to thrive. By planting additional species like Kahikatea near a stream and incorporating long-lived natives throughout, we’ve ensured that this patch of forest will grow into a rich, diverse ecosystem.

Why Infill Planting Matters

  1. Diversity Boost: Adding a mix of species supports biodiversity, creating habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife.

  2. Longevity: Introducing long-lived species ensures the forest remains sustainable and dynamic over time.

  3. Adaptability: Forests aren’t static. Infill planting allows us to adapt to changing conditions and replace trees that may not have thrived.

  4. Aesthetic Appeal: A dense, varied forest looks beautiful and feels more natural.

Planning for Success
Infill planting isn’t just about adding more trees. It requires careful planning to:

  • Match Species to Environment: For example, kahikatea thrive in wetter areas, making them perfect for planting near streams.

  • Monitor and Maintain: Newly planted areas need a little extra care in their early years to ensure survival.

A Forest That Evolves Over Time
Creating a native forest is a long-term commitment, and infill planting is part of that journey. With careful planning, regular maintenance, and a willingness to adapt, we can create stunning native ecosystems that thrive for generations.
