Transforming Land with Mānuka and Kānuka

At Restore Native, seeing the transformation of land through native planting is one of the most rewarding parts of our work. Two years ago, we planted Mānuka, Kānuka, and Tōtara in an area that was infertile and in need of restoration. Today, those plants have flourished, creating a thriving ecosystem and a glimpse of the forest to come.

Mānuka and Kānuka are the heavy lifters in restoration planting. These fast-growing species are ideal for establishing early canopy cover and improving soil conditions. In just two years, these trees have grown to an impressive height of up to three metres. Their rapid growth helps to protect slower-growing species, like tōtara, providing shade and shelter while enriching the surrounding environment.

Building a Diverse Forest
In this particular project, we planted Tōtara alongside the Mānuka and Kānuka. While the Mānuka and Kānuka create the initial structure of the forest, Tōtara is the long-term contributor, adding diversity and resilience. Over time, Tōtara will grow into a towering presence, offering fruit for birds and contributing to the forest’s ecosystem for centuries.

Planting for Success
The trees were spaced about two metres apart, a common approach for restoration projects. This spacing allows for rapid canopy formation while giving the plants room to grow and thrive. In another year or two, the Mānuka and Kānuka will form a dense canopy, creating the conditions needed for a self-sustaining forest.

Even in areas with poor soil fertility, native plants can thrive when given the right start. The growth achieved in just two years showcases the resilience and strength of New Zealand's native species. By selecting the right plants and following sound planting practices, it's possible to transform even the most challenging sites into vibrant ecosystems.
