When selecting native trees for your garden or restoration project, one of the key factors to consider is not just the size of the plant, but the type of tree and how it grows. At Restore Native, we take great care in choosing the right species for each stage of growth, and pot size plays an important role in how well the tree will develop.
Take the Tōtara, for example. We provide these in one-litre pots, and while it may not seem large, it’s already at nearly a metre tall with a strong, sturdy trunk. Tōtara are slow-growing trees that live for hundreds of years—some even up to 500 years. As such, they don’t need to rush through their early years. Instead, we grow them for a couple of extra years in the nursery to ensure they develop a strong trunk and healthy roots before being planted out. The larger pot helps the tree establish a solid root system, giving it the foundation it needs to grow tall and strong once it’s in the ground.
In contrast, trees like Mānuka, which grow much faster, don’t require the same pot size or extended growth period. By understanding the natural growth patterns of each species, we can tailor our nursery care to suit the specific needs of the tree. This means you’re investing in plants that are not only the right size but are also the right grade for your project.
The key to a successful restoration or planting project is choosing the right tree for the job—whether it’s a slow-growing Tōtara or a fast-growing Mānuka—and ensuring it has been nurtured for the best possible start. With proper root development, strong growth, and careful planting, you’ll be well on your way to establishing a thriving, sustainable forest.
