What size trees should I buy?

This is a great question, and opinions on this can be quite strong. At Restore Native, we believe in providing options that cater to different needs and preferences.

Our Standard Size: T28 Grade

Primarily, we grow most of our plants in T28 grade or half a litre. These trees are approximately 500mm tall, and we've found they offer an excellent balance of size, cost, and efficiency for establishing high-quality native bush. If you're working on a revegetation project, this size is likely to be a great fit for you.

Smaller Grades for Certain Species

For species like Manuka and Kanuka, we find that you can often get away with a T40 grade (40 cell), which is slightly smaller at 400mm – 500mm tall. These smaller grades can be more economical and still grow very well. They are particularly suited for species that grow quickly and can establish themselves rapidly.

Larger Grades for Long-Lived Trees

For longer-lived species like Kahikatea and Totara, we recommend using a 1-litre pot. These trees are typically 3 – 4 years old, larger, and more established. This larger size gives them a better start, as these species take longer to grow and benefit from being a bit bigger when planted.

Factors to Consider

Ultimately, the size of the trees you should buy depends on several factors:

  • Your Site: The specific conditions of your planting site.

  • Your Budget: How much you are willing to invest.

  • Long-Term Plans: Your goals for your bit of bush.

We are here to help you make the best choice for your project. Whether you need advice on the right size of plant or recommendations based on your specific needs, feel free to get in touch with us. We're happy to provide guidance and ensure you get the most suitable trees for your revegetation efforts.
