The short answer is: most of them absolutely are. At Restore Native, we are deeply committed to ecosourcing to ensure that our plants are not only hardy but also well-suited to their natural environment.
Our Commitment to Ecosourcing
Living on a beautiful farm in Te Miro, surrounded by stunning native bush, provides us with a fantastic opportunity to collect seeds locally. Additionally, we collaborate with many of our amazing clients across the Waikato to gather high-quality seeds. This local sourcing helps us maintain the genetic integrity and resilience of our plants.
Our Germination Process
We pride ourselves on germinating most of our plants from seed right here in our nursery. While there are some specialist varieties that we send to another nursery for germination, our primary focus is on ecosourcing seeds from the Waikato region. This approach allows us to grow trees that are particularly hardy and well-adapted to the local conditions.
Challenges and Realities
Of course, ecosourcing isn't always perfect. With common backyard plants like Grisilinia and Pittosporum hedges, there is sometimes a chance of genetic crossover. However, we take great care in selecting and collecting our seeds, ensuring we know the parent trees and their origins. This diligence helps us grow robust, high-quality trees.
Yes, we ecosource wherever we can, and our primary goal is to cultivate exceptionally hardy trees. By focusing on local seed collection and careful germination practices, we strive to provide plants that will thrive in their intended environments.
