When it comes to protecting your newly planted native trees, opinions vary. However, based on our extensive experience planting in the Waikato region, we’ve found that plant protection measures are often unnecessary.
Why Extensive Protection May Not Be Necessary
In the Waikato, the climate is generally favourable for young plants, and we don’t face the same pest pressures as other regions. Here’s why you might not need to invest heavily in plant protection:
Climate Conditions: Waikato's climate is conducive to fast-growing plants, which reduces the need for protection against weather extremes.
Pest Pressure: Unlike the South Island, where rabbits and other pests can devastate young plants, Waikato doesn’t typically suffer from such issues. The absence of significant rabbit populations means less need for protective measures like sleeves or wool coverings.
What to do instead
Instead of focusing on plant protection, prioritise these essential steps to ensure your plants thrive:
Site Preparation: Proper site preparation is crucial. Make sure you’ve controlled weeds and reduced competition before planting.
Quality Plants: Choose high-quality plants that are well-suited to your site conditions.
Correct Planting Techniques: Ensure that your planting techniques are sound. Planting at the right depth and spacing will help your trees establish quickly.
Regular Maintenance: Regular releasing and maintenance will keep your plants healthy and reduce the need for additional protection.
When Protection Might Be Necessary
There are exceptions where plant protection might be beneficial:
High Pest Areas: If you’re planting in an area with high populations of rabbits, hares, goats, or deer, you’ll need to control these animals before and during the planting process.
Specific Site Conditions: Certain sites with unique challenges might require additional protection. Assess your specific site to determine if extra measures are needed.
In most cases, especially in the Waikato, you can achieve great results without investing heavily in plant protection measures. Focus on good site preparation, choosing quality plants, proper planting techniques, and regular maintenance. These steps will ensure your native trees grow strong and healthy without the need for extensive protection.
